JOURNALISM EXPERIENCE
Visual Editor, Designer • Alaska Newspapers, Inc. and First Alaskans magazine, March 2010-present
- Designs two weekly newspapers, The Tundra Drums and The Seward Phoenix Log. Creative art director for First Alaskans, an Alaska Native business, culture and lifestyles magazine. Works closely with editorial staff to develop alternative presentation ideas, graphics and illustrations. Dummies, designs and prepares pages to plate. Tones photos for all projects. Designs special sections, advertisements and commercial print jobs.
- Wrote, assigned and edited stories, planned content, toned photos and designed special sections for the Anchorage Daily News. Took occasional photos. Was in charge of sections including Alaska House & Home, Alaska Pulse, Best of Alaska and Alaska Visitors’ Guide. Planned logistics, determined production schedule, tracked sales and goals and created sales packets for advertising staff.
- Designed front and other pages, including Nation/World cover, Business cover, Outdoors page and inside news pages. Created and edited graphics, charts, maps, illustrations and other graphic elements. Edited stories, wrote headlines and cutlines, wrote promos, proofed pages and uploaded news content to Web site.
- Reported features and compiled briefs and obituaries for the Washington State University alumni magazine.
- Edited stories, wrote headlines, designed pages, chose wire content, planned, designed and edited Life sections, and produced special sections.
- Wrote headlines, designed and edited pages for features and special tab sections for newspaper.
- Positions held include editor-in-chief, managing editor (twice), copy editor, copy chief and MiX (entertainment section) editor. Major accomplishments include newspaper redesign and launch of MiX, a weekly entertainment special section.
- Positions included editor-in-chief 2004-05 and division editor for Greek Life 2003-04.
OTHER DESIGN PROJECTS
Wine label design • 2007
- Created a label that was chosen from many by Washington State University’s Alumni Association for its Artist Expression Series 2007 release of a Woodward Canyon wine. Prints of the piece were sold and displayed in an art gallery and several university locations.
- In charge of all aspects of design and production of a literary magazine produced by the Washington State University English department.
